Custom Paint by Numbers: Turn Your Photos into Paintable Art
March 24, 2026
The magic of custom paint by numbers is turning a personal photo - a wedding shot, a pet portrait, a landscape from your favorite trip - into a hands-on art project. But not every photo translates well to a numbered pattern.
What Makes a Good Source Photo
High contrast: Photos with clear differences between subject and background translate best. A portrait with a blurred background is ideal. A group photo in a cluttered room is challenging.
Strong lighting: Well-lit photos with defined shadows create clear regions in the pattern. Flat, even lighting produces muddy, hard-to-distinguish sections.
Simple composition: Less is more. A single pet centered in frame produces a better pattern than three pets overlapping. The pattern generator needs clear boundaries between color regions.
How Pattern Generation Works
The algorithm performs several steps: First, it reduces the image to a limited palette (typically 24-36 colors for a complex image, 12-20 for simpler ones). Then it groups adjacent pixels of similar color into regions. Each region gets a number corresponding to its paint color. Finally, thin boundary lines are drawn between regions.
Choosing the Right Complexity
Beginner (12-16 colors, large regions): Bold, impressionistic result. Great for simple subjects and first-timers. Regions are large enough to paint comfortably.
Intermediate (20-24 colors, medium regions): Good balance of detail and paintability. Suitable for landscapes and portraits where you want recognizable features.
Advanced (30-36 colors, fine regions): Near-photographic detail when painted carefully. Requires patience and fine brushes. Some regions may be only a few millimeters across.
Use our pattern generator to experiment with different color counts and see which complexity level works best for your specific photo.
